A small batch of books I got my hands on last weekend – two of them are mine, the other two are a loan.
One is about the Industry of Silk, although the described methods are not all that industrial when compared to what we have today. I really like that almost half the book is dedicated to the silkworm breeding, showing how difficult it is.
The smaller one is about Lathe Turning, which is something that I got somewhat fixated on after watching this metal turner and this wood turner working. Sometimes, it’s not that easy to find a simple and clear list of tools surrounding a craft, especially in portuguese, and this book pretty much covers it.
The Story of Gems is just plain beautiful and easy to browse. It carries an illustrated list of jewel cuts, which are nice to look at if you’re into geometry, patterns and that sort of thing.
The last one is about knitting, and although I don’t knit (or turn metal nor breed silk worms, by the way), if it is a book dedicated to teaching you how to do something, I want it in my collection.

Um grupo de livros que arranjei o fim-de-semana passado – dois meus e dois emprestados.
Um é sobre a Indústria da Seda, apesar dos métodos descritos não serem lá muito industriais quando comparados com o que temos hoje. Gosto que metade do livro seja dedicado à sericultura. Só mostra como é delicada essa tarefa.
O mais pequeno é um Manual de Torneiro Mecânico, algo em que tenho andado um pouco fixada depois de ver este repuxador e este torneiro de madeira a trabalhar. Não é muito fácil encontrar livros que listem as ferramentas utilizadas num determinado ofício, principalmente em português, e este livro faz muito bem isso.
O Story of Gems é simplesmente bonito de ler e folhear. Tem uma lista ilustrada de cortes de jóias, o que é bonito de ver para quem gosta de geometria, padrões e esse tipo de coisas.
O último é sobre tricot, coisa que eu não faço, tal como também não produzo seda nem trabalho num torno, mas se é um manual prático, quero tê-lo na minha colecção.

Ontem, saiu no blog da Kaufmann Mercantile uma entrevista minha, que podem ler por lá.

Yes, Polyester, a refined fibre created from a selection of the best hydrocarbons, manufactured exclusively through traditional methods in the old Sinchuan factory.
I really need to thank this clothing brand for explaining that this polyester shirt costs 80eur on sale, because plastic is a noble material, as old as fossilized woods, and also very durable. Actually, I believe this last part is true because it doesn’t decompose that well and it will last for decades in the landfill, even if you can’t wear it anymore.
I don’t have anything against polyester, but don’t try to make it look like something it isn’t.

Sim, Poliéster, uma refinada fibra criada a partir da selecção dos melhores hidrocarbonetos, trabalhados exclusivamente por métodos tradicionais na antiga fábrica de Shinchuan.
Só tenho de agradecer a esta marca de vestuário por me explicar que uma camisa de poliéster custa 80eur em saldos, porque este exclusivo plástico é um material nobre, tão antigo como bosques pré-históricos fossilizados, e que vai durar imenso tempo. Esta última parte deve ser verdade, porque vai durar décadas no aterro, mesmo que já não se possa usar.
Não tenho nada contra o poliéster, só não façam dele uma coisa que não é.

Giant skeins of wool from Churra sheep in Trás-os-Montes, spun with a giant spindle.
They were given to me for an exhibition, and they’ve been part of the home décor ever since.

It was almost a year ago, but I still believe in what I said in my talk at the TEDxVimaranes: artisanal techniques should not be preserved.
From that moment on I have been stoping myself from using words like “conservation”, “tradition” and “memory”, and if there was a time when I used them it was because I didn’t know what they really meant in the context of what I had been defending. They mean “death”.
So, here’s the video, where you can see me make my case for artisanal high tech and its evolution for the future .
Unfortunately, it’s not subtitled, so you would have to understand a little bit of portuguese – yes, I know that’s very unlikely…

Já foi há quase um ano, mas acredito cada vez mais naquilo que preparei para dizer na apresentação do TEDxVimaranes: o trabalho artesanal não deve ser preservado.
Desde então que tenho feito questão de remover do meu léxico palavras como “conservação”, “tradição” e “memória”, e se houve uma altura em que as proferi, foi porque não sabia o que queriam dizer no contexto do trabalho que tenho vindo a defender. – significam “morte”.
Por isso, fica aqui o vídeo, onde me podem ver a apresentar o meu caso a favor da alta tecnologia artesanal e da sua evolução para o futuro, e também a engasgar lá para o meio porque o vídeo não correu, que é para se rirem um bocado.

Coisas que só se encontram em sítios que vendem boas luvas: a almofada onde pousar o cotovelo enquanto nos calçam a luva, e o alargador, para eventualmente alargar os dedos das luvas quando necessário.
Quando tanta atenção é despendida para garantir que algo nos serve perfeitamente, não temos outra escolha senão a de valorizar o que compramos.
