Filipa Mesquita apresenta Saber Fazer by alicebernardo

A Filipa fez-me uma visita cá a casa para trocarmos umas ideias sobre fiar, tecer e o mundo das marionetas onde ela vive. O material que recolho por estas andanças pode servir para muita coisa, e ela há-de fazer bom uso dele.
Pelo meio da conversa sobre marionetas, mostrou-me a palheta que os marionetistas do Teatro D.Roberto usam para fazer o típico som estridente, e que ela recebeu de presente há bem pouco tempo. Uma peça que pode estar permanentemente invisível, mas tem muita importância e significado para quem sabe o que é.

Antes de a deixar sair, não resisti a pedir-lhe para me deixar gravar umas apresentações para o Saber Fazer, assim a começar num tom sério e a descambar para um dos sotaques cá do Norte, como deve ser.

Filipa payed me a visit to discuss a few ideas about spinning, weaving and and the puppet theatre world she lives in. The material I have been collecting here can be used for many things, and I know she’ll make good use of it.
Somewhere along the conversation she showed me this little piece that the pupeteers of the D.Roberto theatre, a portuguese tradicional puppet theatre, use to make a typical loud sound, and that she got as a gift no long ago. This is something that may be always invisible, but it carries a lot of meaning to those who know what it is.

Before she left, I couldn’t help asking her to let me record her present the Saber Fazer a couple of times, in her theatre voice. We started seriously, but then she couldn’t resist going for the versions with a strong northern portuguese accent.

Começar a ver a informação que reuni ao longo de meses de trabalho a aparecer traduzida nos desenhos da Helena é um daqueles momentos fantásticos. Isso e ver que ela tem uma pasta só dedicada ao Saber Fazer.

Starting to see the all the information I gathered through several months of work translated in Helena‘s illustrations is one of those great moments. That and noticing that she has a whole folder dedicated to the Saber Fazer.

Já mostrei um pouco do processo, já mostrei o cachecol, mas faltava ainda vê-lo no pescoço de alguém, que é onde ele pertence. Neste caso, o belo pescoço foi o da Diana Bouça-Nova, que veio de propósito cá a casa para eu a fotografar.

O cachecol, esse, para já é peça única, mas prevemos em breve tê-lo onde possa ser visto ao vivo.
Pelo menos até o tempo frio chegar, porque nessa altura, eu, a Cátia e a Filipa, vamos ter de o partilhar (sim, isto já ficou acordado entre nós…).
Mas como esta peça não foi feita apenas para ficar em exposição e o que é bom e bonito é para se usar, daqui a uns meses haverão novidades a esse respeito.

I’ve shown a little bit of the process, I’ve shown the neckwarmer, and now I’ll show it on somebody’s neck, where it belongs.
In this case, the beautiful neck belongs to Diana Bouça-Nova, that came to my house so that I could photograph her.

The neckwarmer is one of a kind, but we intend to display it somewhere where it can be seen very soon.
At least  until the cold weather arrives again, because at that time me, Cátia and Filipa will have to share it (yes, we have this figured out…).
But since this neckwarmer wasn’t made only to look at, and what’s beautiful and well made should be worn, I’ll have some news about that in a few months.

Eu podia passar horas a olhar para esta peça, não só pelo que representa, mas pela perfeição dos pormenores.
O destaque claro que vai para o bordado, iniciado pela D.Conceição e terminado pela filha Cátia, metade das Ponto Margarida e a miúda com um problema relacionado com o perfeccionismo de que já falei aqui antes.
Não há um ponto ao lado nem uma linha fora de sítio e, sinceramente, numa peça destas, nenhuma de nós aceitaria menos do que isso.

Foi trabalhado dentro dos critérios que definem oficialmente o Bordado de Guimarães, mas em vez da tradicional linha vermelha, optamos pelo castanho e deixamos o toque de cor para o forro em lã e caxemira, num vermelho profundo a combinar bem com o tom chocolate da fita.
O modelo do cachecol é o que uso nos meus cachecóis plissados, com umas pequenas alterações para receber o desenho da Filipa.

Houve a dedicação total de ambas as partes de fazer o melhor trabalho que podíamos, e isso vê-se no resultado final.

I could spend hours looking at this neckwarmer. Not only for what it represents, but for the absolute perfection in all the details.
The highlight goes to the embroidery work, obviously, started by D.Conceição and finished by her daughter Cátia, half of Ponto Margarida and the girl with the problem with perfectionism that I mentioned here before.
All the stitches fall perfectly in place and, honestly, in a piece like this, none of us expected less that that.

The neckwarmer was designed to fit the criteria the officially define the Guimarães Embroidery, but instead of the traditional red thread, we chose brownand left the colour for the red wool and cashmere lining.
The model is the same that I use in my pleated neckwarmers, minus a few alterations that were made to receive Filipa‘s embroidery design.

There was a full commitment from both sides to do the best job we could, and that’s obvious in the final outcome.

Assim, este cachecol começou algures num campo, em S.Torcato, e passou por dúzias de mãos e ferramentas antes de chegar a Braga ao Instituto Monsenhor Airosa, onde foi tecido pela D.Celeste num tear do início do séc.XX. Depois veio para as minhas mãos para ser modelado, foi marcado com o desenho da Filipa, bordado pela Cátia e pela D.Conceição, e voltou para mim para ser terminado e fotografado.

Claro que estou muito contente com o resultado final, mas saber que, além de conhecer os processos de produção, conseguir este material foi resultado do trabalho que tenho vindo a fazer aqui, é muito melhor.

O valor desta peça vai muito além do que se vê à superfície. É uma peça para essencialistas.

A few months ago, the girls from Ponto Margarida contacted me with the idea of collaborating on a small piece. I like the traditional Guimarães Embroidery and the idea of making one of my neckwarmers entirely hand embroidered really pleased me.
Right from the beggining, we decided that it was only worth to invest time embroidering a piece like this if we used the best linen available, and the best linen I know is handmade.

So, this neckwarmer started somewhere in this field, in S.Torcato, and went through dozens of hands and tools before it got to Braga, to the Instituto Monsenhor Airosa, to be woven by D.Celeste in a loom from the beggining og the XXth century. Then, it came back to my hands to be modelled, stamped with Filipa’s design, embroidered by Cátia and her mother, and came back to me to be finished and photographed.

Of course I’m very happy with the final result, but along with knowing the production processes, knowing where to get this linen because of the work I’ve been doing here feels great.

The value of this piece goes long beyond the surface. It’s a piece made for the essencialists.

Já alguma vez disse aqui que é bom encontrar rolos com fotografias que nem sabia que tinha?
De certeza que já, mas é mesmo muito bom.
