A partir de agora, às sextas-feiras, vou publicar aqui um resumo do que tem acontecido no Saber Fazer, durante a semana.
As últimas actualizações foram sobre:

- a minha visita à D.Lúcia, tecedeira, de onde trouxe registos de alguns dos padrões têxteis mais típicos da zona do Barroso.
- a D.Fátima Gomes, que faz alguns dos tapetes em lã mais bonitos que já vi (mais sobre isto em breve), e que me mostrou como consegue fiar a lã tão espessa com um fuso esculpido a partir do cabo de uma vassoura, com roda e com uma fiandeira eléctrica do início do séc.XX.
- as considerações da D.Adelaide sobre a relação directa entre a qualidade da lã e o cuidado que se tem com o rebanho, e também sobre a diferença entre boa lã e má lã.

From now on, on fridays, I’ll be posting a little summary about what has been going on with Saber Fazer, during the week.
The last updates were about:

- my visit to D.Lúcia, weaver, that lend me her textile patterns, typical from the Barroso region.
- D.Fátima Gomes, that makes some of the most beautiful wool rugs I’ve ever seen (more about this soon), and that showed me how she spins the wool so thick with a spindle she carved from a broom stick, a spinning wheel and an electric spinner from the beginning of the XXth century.
- D.Adelaide’s thoughts about the correlation between the quality of the wool and the way sheep are treated, and also her demonstration of good wool versus bad wool.

A melhor parte de ter filmado um clip da D.Conceição a bordar isto foi ter gravado o seu desabafo em relação àquilo a que ela chama o excesso de perfeccionismo da Cátia.
Ela parece queixar-se, mas a mim soa-me a um doce elogio ao trabalho da filha.

The best part of filming a small clip with D.Conceição embroidering this was recording her talking about what she calls the excessive perfeccionism of her daughter Cátia, that also embroiders.
She looks like she’s complaining, but to me it sounds like a sweet compliment to her daughter’s great work.

Acabar a semana em grande é poder publicar um pequeno teaser do trabalho que a Maria Helena anda a desenvolver para o nosso livro sobre o trabalho da lã, tal como aprendi com a D.Ilídia.
Este gif foi feito a partir das imagens do passo-a-passo criadas de propósito para ensinar a cardar, que no livro será mais explícito.
Estou tão contente.

Foi no último sábado, o TEDxVimaranes que decorreu no CCVF.
Tive a honra de ser convidada para oradora e mostrar mais sobre o Saber Fazer, além do que tenho conseguido transmitir por aqui. Isto porque o espírito TED obrigou-me a definir e a entender certos pontos, sobre este meu trabalho, que por uma razão ou outra tinha vindo sempre a adiar. Para explicar isto melhor, espero pela disponibilização do vídeo.

Apesar do nervosismo, que uma coisa é falar para meia dúzia de pessoas, outra é para um auditório inteiro, passei a apresentação toda rodeada pelas imagens e pelo trabalho das pessoas fantásticas que conheci através do Saber Fazer, por isso não havia maneira de correr muito mal.

Logo a abrir, sobre a imagem da lã da Casa do Trabalho do Nordeste, ficou o lindo logotipo que o meu amigo Zé Peneda desenhou. Vão aqui para ver o trabalho dele e contactem-no para fazer coisas fantásticas, que eu garanto o sucesso.

De destacar esteve a capacidade da equipa que organizou o evento, em tempo recorde e sem falhas. Honestamente ao nível de um TED sem “x” à frente. Até diria que só em Guimarães é que isto é possível – é preciso conhecer os vimaranenses para perceber isto.

It was on the last saturday that the TEDxVimaranes happened here in Guimarães, in the CCVF.
I was very honoured to be invited to speak and show more about my Saber Fazer project, beyond what I have been able to show here. This was simply because  the TED spirit made me define and understand certain things about my work that I had been delaying. To explain this better I’ll wait for the video to be available.

Although I was quite nervous, because it’s one thing to speak to a small group and another to a big auditorium, my presentation was filled with all the wonderful people I’ve met through the project, so I guess it couldn’t go too wrong.

Right upfront, the logo that my friend Zé Peneda designed looked great on top of one of the first photos I ever made for the project. Go here, see more of his work and contact him to design great stuff for you.

Something I need to highlight was the organization‘s ability to organize such an event in such a short time and flawlessly. Honestly up to the level of a TED without the “x” part. I would say that this is only possible in Guimarães – you would have to know “vimaranense” people to understand.

É bom ir a sítios bonitos que, ainda por cima, têm gente que é bonita por dentro e por fora. Passei pela Ovelha Negra, uma visita que já andava a adiar há demasiado tempo.
Ao entrar numa loja dedicada às lãs e às agulhas é que percebo que esta aventura do Saber Fazer me tem alterado completamente. Sinto-me imediatamente atraída pelas que mais se assemelham ao que estou habituada a ver e a sentir nas lãs tratadas e fiadas à mão.
Gosto desta mudança.

It’s nice to visit beautiful places that have beautiful people, on the inside and on the outside, on top of that. It was a visit to Ovelha Negra shop, that I had been postponing what feels like forever.
Entering a shop fully dedicated to knitting I understood that the Saber Fazer adventure has changed me completely. In a shop filled with wool I feel immediately attracted to the ones that ressemble the most the natural wools I am now used to see and feel in the handspun wools.
I like this change.

Foi assim que o Miguel me veio buscar à estação de metro das Sete Bicas, para irmos de bicicleta para Matosinhos até à loja da Velo Culture.
Antes que perguntem: sim, a loja tem estação de metro à porta. Mas como eu vou a pé para todo o lado, experimentar a bicicleta foi uma opção diferente. Mesmo que eu não a tenha usado como devia ser, mas tenha antes ido de boleia num passeio fantástico.
Há que dar mérito ao ciclista pela condução suave, que me provou que o Porto é uma cidade para se andar de bicicleta ou, pelo menos, para ir à boleia no “porta-couves” da bicicleta dos outros.

That’s how Miguel picked me up at the Sete Bicas metro station in Porto, to take me to the Velo Culture shop in Matosinhos.
Before you ask: yes, there’s a metro stop right outside the shop. But since I walk pretty much everywhere, trying the bike was a different option. Even if I didn’t use it as it is supposed, but just took a fantastic ride in the back.
I have to give credits to the cyclist for the smooth driving and for proving that Porto is a cyclable city. Or at least, to ride with someone else cycling.

Pensava que esta encomenda se tinha perdido de vez. Afinal, só ficou retida uns meses na alfândega, tendo todos os frasquinhos sido abertos e experimentados. Às vezes, acho que trabalhar num sítio onde se podem abrir as encomendas de toda a gente deve ser divertido.
Mas não os censuro, porque os perfumes feitos pela Heather são mesmo especiais e a caixa já cheirava maravilhosamente antes de a abrir sequer (provavelmente porque alguém na alfândega não fechou bem a amostra de Lightning Paw!).

Da primeira vez escolhi as amostras à distância, guiando-me pelo que sei que é quase sempre a minha mistura favorita: flores, especialmente rosas e/ou jasmim, com citrinos. Escolhi o Dafne, o Nationale 6/7 e não consegui resistir ao Fôret, porque obviamente não consigo resistir a um perfume que afirma cheirar a floresta.

Acertei em todos, embora o Dafne seja o meu favorito absoluto, mas também não deve ser difícil acertar quando os ingredientes-base são de qualidade e misturados com tanta delicadeza. É assim que um perfume deve cheirar.

I thought the package was lost, but it turns out it got stuck in customs for a couple of months. All the little bottles have been opened and tried on, I’m sure. Sometimes, I think working in a place where you get to open everybody’s packages could be a lot of fun.
But I don’t blame them, because Heather’s  scents are really special and the box smelled wonderfully even before I opened it (probably because someone in customs didn’t close the Lightning Paw sample very well!).

The first time, I picked the samples just by knowing what my favourite combination usually is: flowers, especially roses and/or jasmine, with citrines. I picked Dafne, Nationale 6/7 and I couldn’t resist Fôret because, obviously, I can’t resist a perfume that claims to smell like a forest.

I loved them all, but especially Dafne that became my absolut favourite. But then again, it’s not easy to make a wrong choice when the ingredients have so much quality and are blended with so much sensitivity. This is how a perfume should smell.
