Se acompanham este blog e o Saber Fazer há tempo suficiente, sabem que há mais de um ano que documento e divulgo o trabalho das Mulheres de Bucos. Mais exactamente, foi no início de Julho de 2011 que lá fui a primeira vez e dei início a um longo e detalhado processo de registo do trabalho deste grupo de mulheres.
No passado dia 7 de Setembro foram inauguradas as novas instalações da Casa da Lã, na escola primária de Bucos, que foi parcialmente convertida para as receber.
Ao longo das paredes estão expostas algumas das imagens que fui fazendo ao longo do último ano e os textos que escrevi para melhor explicar a quem as visita, o trabalho que ali se faz. A acompanhar a exposição, foi publicado também um livro onde também constam imagens e textos da minha autoria.

Como fiz o registo no âmbito do Saber Fazer, toda a informação contida no livro, que é da minha autoria, está integralmente disponível na página dedicada às Mulheres de Bucos, que compreende todo o Ciclo da Lã, tal como me foi ensinado por estas artesãs. No final, está presente ainda um glossário que ajuda a entender muitos dos termos utilizados no âmbito desta técnica e, em algumas das fases estão disponíveis também vídeos.

If you’ve been reading this blog and accompanying my work with Saber Fazer long enough, you know it’s been over a year since I started documenting and talking about the the Women of Bucos.
The past September 7th, the new installations for the Casa da Lã were inaugurated in the old Bucos elementary school, that was partially converted to receive them.
Along the walls, you will find the photos I took during the past year and texts that I wrote explaining visitors how these women work and what the cycle of wool is all about, both in portuguese and english.
A book was also published, containing more images and more extensive texts on the cycle of wool.

Having done this documentation work under the Saber Fazer project, I have published all the information contained in the book in the page belonging to the Women of Bucos, explaining the cycle of wool as it was taught to me by these artisans. Although the more extense text is only available in portuguese, there are shorter english translations and some of the phases include videos also.

As minhas tentativas de encomendar e comprar fusos à D.Ilídia, para outras pessoas que mos têm pedido, têm sido um fracasso. Para ela os fusos não se vendem, oferecem-se. E dos fusos que me são oferecidos, eu não me consigo separar.
Desta vez tinha posto dois de parte para mim: um fuso para torcer, que já me tinha dito que eu devia ter, e um outro muito especial que o pai lhe fez. A seguir ainda foi surripiar um novo à estante do filho. Na estante estavam muitos fusos, em várias fases de trabalho. Uns ainda por cortar, outros já cortados, mas sem a “mainça”. Todos perfeitos em pormenor, tamanho e peso.

O filho dela também lhe construiu o sarilho que se transforma em dobadoira e muitas das ferramentas mais improvisadas que por lá andam. Ainda não desisti de o convencer a deixar-me vê-lo fazer um fuso, ferramenta mística para mim.

Do amor dela à lã, dos fusos e das ferramentas que o pai e o filho lhe fizeram saem fios maravilhosos.

My attempts at ordering and buying spindles from D.Ilídia, to give them to other people that asked me to, have been a complete failure. She says spindle aren’t sold, they are offered. And I simply can’t part with spindles that were offered to me.
This time around she had set aside two for me: one plying spindle and a special one that was made by her father. Then she went on to steal another one from her son’s workshop. On his shelf were many oak spindles, some uncut, others cut but without the screw. All of them perfect in detail, size and weight.

Her son also built this skeiner that turns into a swift, and many of the tools she has laying around. I haven’t given up on convincing him to let me to be there the next time he’s making spindles.

And from her love for wool, from the spindles and tools her father and soon built for her, wonderful yarns are born.
